What People Mean by Topping
Most folks who call about topping want the same thing. The tree got too big for the spot, it is over the house or the power drop, and they want the height taken off. That is a completely reasonable thing to want and we can help with it.
What we will not do is traditional topping, meaning cutting the main stems back to stubs at whatever height looks right. It is still common, and it causes real harm. The tree responds by pushing out dozens of fast weak shoots from just below each cut. Those shoots are attached to the outside of the stub instead of anchored in the wood, so within a few years you have a tree that is taller than it was, denser, and far more likely to fail in a storm than before.
Meanwhile the open stubs rot inward because there is no way for the tree to seal a cut like that. Here is when people usually call us about height.

What We Do Instead
Crown reduction gets you the same result and keeps the tree healthy. Rather than cutting through the middle of a limb, each cut goes back to a lateral branch large enough to take over as the new leader.
The tree keeps a natural shape, the wound seals properly, and you do not get the explosion of weak regrowth. Typically we can take fifteen to twenty five percent off the height in one visit without stressing the tree.
It still looks like a tree when we leave, just a smaller one. Nothing gets stubbed off, so the tree is not thrown into panic mode and you do not get a thicket of sucker growth two summers later.
Most reductions run off the bucket truck. The operator gets set where he can reach the top of the crown, and the cuts get made one at a time back to a lateral that can carry the limb. When the tree sits somewhere the truck cannot reach, a climber goes up on rope and works the crown the same way. The method does not change. Only the way we get to the wood changes.

The size of the tree sets the baseline. Height and trunk diameter decide most of it, and a forty foot maple in a front yard is very different money from a big old hardwood standing over a house.
Which way it leans matters too. A tree that leans toward a building has to be worked piece by piece and roped, which takes longer than a tree that leans out into open ground.
Whether the truck reaches changes the hours. If we can set the truck close and reach the crown, the job moves fast. If a man has to climb it and work the whole crown on rope, that is more hours.
How far the chipper sits adds up as well. Every limb has to get to the chipper, and a long carry across a lawn or through a gate adds real time to the job.
What the wood comes out over is the last piece. Reduction on a large crown makes a lot of brush. If any of it has to come out over a roof, a fence, or a garden, it gets lowered on rope instead of dropped, and that is slower.

- Why will you not just top my tree?
Because it damages the tree and makes it more dangerous, not less. The regrowth after topping is weakly attached and breaks in storms, and the stub cuts rot. Crown reduction gets you the height you want without that outcome.
- How much height can you actually take off a tree?
Generally fifteen to twenty five percent in a single visit. More than that in one go puts the tree under real stress. If you need a bigger change we can stage it over two seasons.
- Will it grow back to the same height?
It will keep growing, so a reduction is not permanent. Most trees hold the new shape for several years before wanting attention again, which is far longer than a topped tree.
- My tree was topped years ago. Can it be fixed?
Often it can be improved. Restoration pruning thins the sucker growth and selects the strongest shoots to become real limbs again. It takes a few visits over several years but it beats leaving it.
- What if the tree is just in the wrong place?
Sometimes that is the honest answer. A species that wants to be eighty feet tall, planted fifteen feet from the house, is going to be a recurring expense forever. In that case removal and replanting something appropriate costs less over ten years than reducing the same tree every three. We will lay out both options with prices and let you decide. We are not going to talk you into a removal you do not want, and we are not going to keep selling you reductions on a tree that should come out.
