Why Grind the Stump
Taking the tree down is half the job. What is left is a stump sitting in the yard, and it does not go anywhere on its own. Grinding chews it out with a carbide wheel so the ground goes back to being ground. These are the reasons folks around Clarke and Frederick County call us about a stump.

How Deep We Grind
Standard grinding takes the stump six to eight inches below grade, which is enough for grass, sod, and normal landscaping.
If you are planting a new tree in the same spot or pouring a patio, tell us and we will go deeper, usually twelve to eighteen inches, so there is real soil to work with.
One thing worth knowing up front. Grinding handles the stump and the flare, not the whole root system. Roots running out under the lawn will decay on their own over a few years. If you need every root out for a foundation or a utility run, that is excavation, and we will tell you so instead of selling you a grind that will not solve it.

What We Measure
We measure at the widest point of the stump, not the trunk you remember. A big oak flare is a lot more wheel time than a maple that looked the same standing up.
Getting to It
Our grinder fits through most standard gates, so a back yard stump is usually no harder than one out front. A back yard behind a gate, up a slope, or across soft ground takes longer and that shows up in the number.
How Many
Several stumps in one yard cost less each than one stump by itself, because the machine is already there and already running.
How Deep You Need It
Six to eight inches below grade is standard and covers grass and sod. Going twelve to eighteen inches for a new tree or a patio is more work and we price it that way.
