What Cabling and Bracing Do
Cable and rod hold a weak union together so a tree worth real money gets to stay standing.
Cabling runs flexible steel cable high in the canopy between limbs, which limits how far they can move apart in wind. Bracing uses threaded rods through the trunk itself to hold a split or a weak union together.

The Size of the Tree

How Many Cables
One weak union might take a single cable. A tree with three stems pulling apart can take a triangle of them, plus rods through the trunk. We price what the tree actually needs, not a package.
Access
If we can back the bucket up to the tree, the work goes quick. If it sits behind a fence or on a slope and a man has to climb it, that takes longer and it costs more.
What Is Underneath
Working over a roof, a fence, or a patio means everything gets roped and lowered instead of dropped. That is slower work and the price reflects it.
Pruning First

We come out free and look at the union, the wood quality, and the load. Not every weak crotch is a candidate, and you get a firm price before anything starts.
Placement
Cables go roughly two thirds of the way up from the defect to the limb tips. Placement is the whole thing. Put it in the wrong spot and it does nothing.
Installation
Drilled and through bolted to arboricultural standards. No strapping around the trunk, ever. That method kills trees.
Reinspection
We come back and check the hardware. Trees grow, and hardware has to keep up with them.
What It Will Not Do
Cabling is a support system, not a cure. It does not fix decay, it does not reverse root damage, and it does not make an unsafe tree safe forever. On a tree that is already hollow or failing at the base, hardware is money spent to delay something.
It also is not permanent. Cables and braces need inspecting every couple of years, and hardware eventually needs adjusting or replacing as the tree grows around it. If we look at your tree and think this is the wrong call, we will say so rather than install it.

- How long does cabling last?
The hardware itself lasts many years, but it needs inspection every one to two years and eventual adjustment as the tree grows. Treat it as an ongoing relationship with the tree, not a one time fix.
- Will it hurt the tree to drill into it?
A properly placed through bolt does far less harm than the split it is preventing. Trees compartmentalize around correctly installed hardware without trouble.
- Is cabling cheaper than removal?
Usually yes, especially on a large tree, and you keep the shade and the value the tree adds. But it only makes sense if the tree is otherwise healthy.
- Can you cable a tree that already split?
Sometimes, if the split is fresh and the wood is sound. If it has been open long enough to decay, the answer is usually no and we will tell you that.
